8.48pm. Just stepped out to phone home. Had a lovely long chat, feeling calmer. I have a magnificent view of Orion, and the cloud is clearing. This looks set to be our best night of observation yet.
There are loads of planes taking off from Palma airport. As the air is calm and still, the noise is carrying for quite a long way. It would be interesting to take some long exposure photographs of the sky with planes taking off, and seeing the trails of lights that they would create.
It's nearly time to go back inside and face the Chair (as opposed to facing the wall). I will play it by ear how things go, but I would like for Steve, one of our Mercury group who is shy and retiring, to say a few things. He has not said a single word yet this evening. I am conscious of the fact that people really must contribute in order to get the best out of the course.
Mars is stunningly bright tonight. I hope we get the chance to observe it this week.
